Our History

Commitment to Children and Families

Sunnybrook was founded in 1974 by a group of parents and became a nonprofit organization led by a board of directors in 2008 under the leadership of Gerry Tobin and Gerrie Scott. The school was established by families for children and has remained a vibrant community of learners for over fifty years. Children have always been—and always will be—the heart of Sunnybrook.

Its rich creative history is shaped by the spontaneity and flexibility of the program, empowering teachers to share their unique talents and passions. For generations, students have been inspired by unforgettable experiences rooted in classical music, nature, and the performing arts, creating cherished memories that continue to connect the Sunnybrook community.

Today, Sunnybrook is maintained by a dedicated board of parents, alumni parents, grandparents, former Sunnybrook teachers, and passionate community members. Sunnybrook Montessori School recruits and hires teachers that are passionate and knowledgeable about young children and how they develop.

Sunnybrook has continued to evolve while staying true to its child-centered philosophy. Although the school has not had a certified Montessori teacher on staff in recent years, its approach remains rooted in supporting each child’s natural interests and development, now enriched by play- and nature-based learning.
